As you all can already tell, our specialty is roofs or as we say, roofing. To some, it seems like something simple, but when it comes to building a house or a building even, there are so many decisions that need to be made. Today we are going to talk about one decision we have to make, and that is choosing the type of roof to install. There are so many options, colors, sizes, etc.

In continuation, let me explain the top 10 types of roofs:

1-Rolled Roofing

This is the ideal roof for low slope residential homes, shops and sheds. The material consists of long rolls of mineral-impregnated asphalt-impregnated material topped with mineral granules. The convenience of this type is that it is economically friendly and quick. It will last about 10 years.

2-Built Up Roofing

This is one of the oldest options for flat roofing. Several layers of roofing are constructed and impregnated with hot asphalt. This will last you about 20 to 30 years.

3-Membrane Roofing

This one is another for low-pitch/flat roofs. There are 5 types of membrane; Neoprene, EPDM, PVC, Chlorinated polyethylene and chlorosulfonated polyethylene sheets, Polymer-modified bitumens. EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is the best one out of those 5. This ‘rubber roofing’ can last up to 20 to 35 years with its proper maintenance.

4-Asphalt Composite Shingles

In North America, this material is the most popular. It is ideal for homes covering many needs. Also, it is composed of a fiberglass base topped with asphalt and mineral granules. Including a 20 – 30 year warranty it is easy to replace and repair a damaged shingle. This one can last from 12 to 30 years.

5-Standing Seam Metal Roofing

Being the most common metal roof, it is basically aluminum or steel roofing panels meet in raised seams that interlock to keep moisture out. It is known to be snow proof and fireproof. Special skills are required to install these roofs, but they do last 30 to 75 years depending on the type of metal. These are also fully recyclable!

6-Metal Shingles/Shakes

The aesthetic of these roofs are a little more pleasing to some. Adding on the advantages of metal roofing lasting 30 to 50 years!

7-Wood Shingles/Shakes

Another pleasing site are these types of roofs, but can be more expensive and have limitations. Areas with moisture or wildfires should not choose this type of roof in the sake of safety! They are usually made from natural wood, usually cedar or redwood. If you install this in the proper areas it can last up to 60 years! 20 years is the least it can last.

8-Clay Tile

This type is made from earthen clay molded into rolled or interlocking shapes and fired for hardness. This is ideal for hot climates and salt air (near the ocean).Southern coastal regions and desert regions use the roofing mostly. It is pretty expensive but it can last more than a century.

9-Concrete Tile

The similarities to clay tile are strong. It is molded from standard sand-mix concrete and comes with custom hues. It is very heavy and recommended for high wind areas. Life expectancy is 50 years and above.

10-Slate Shingles

Last but not least, we have the finest material we believe there is. This is made of authentic, thin sheets of real stone. It is very hard to find and install. But it is ideal material. This type lasts 75 to 200 years! WOAH.
